Dr Abdulaziz AlAjlan is the Chairman of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He is one of the unique pathologists around the Kingdom and the Middle East.

Dr Abdulaziz AlAjlan, Consultant Dermatopathologist, obtained his Bachelor Degree in Medicine from King Saud University, College of Medicine, Riyadh in 1989. He completed his fellowship in Pathology at King Saud University in 1997. He had a specialty training fellowship in Dermatopathology from Ackerman Academy, USA in 2000. He also obtained Fellowship from British Royal College, UK. He is an outstanding Dermatopathologist.


Mr. Bawazeer graduated from the Faculty of Medicine & Allied Medical Sciences King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah in 1990. He then joined King Abdulaziz University Hospital - Jeddah in the same year as MLSO Biochemistry. He joined National Guard Health Affairs in 1991 as MLSO Hematology/Blood Bank. He became Senior MLSO in Hematology and Blood Bank in 1994 and 1995 respectively. He became the Supervisor in Hematology & Transfusion Medicine in 1997. During his Supervisory year he was offered a scholarship in UK and did his MSc degree in Haematology at the University of Sheffield. In 1999 he became the Operations Administrator, in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, (CAP/AABB accredited) King Abdulaziz Medical City - Jeddah up to now. He is still active in attending trainings, conferences, symposia and courses all over the world (Beirut, Paris, California, Dubai, Canada, Turkey etc.)


Dr. Michael Noble is a Medical Microbiologist physician living in Vancouver British Columbia Canada. He is a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia.

He has focused much of his career on aspects of laboratory quality including the development and management of the Clinical Microbiology Proficiency Testing program (www.CMPT.ca) which provides fresh simulated samples for clinical microbiology laboratories and public health water testing laboratories. Dr. Noble contributes to national and international standards development through working with the Canadians Standards Association, the Standards Council of Canada, and the International Organization for Standardization. Of particular note for medical laboratories he has been a charter member of the ISO Technical Committee 212 and has been actively involved in the development and the revisions of ISO 15189:2012 (Medical Laboratories – requirements for quality and competence.

In addition, Dr. Noble developed and chairs the UBC Program Office for Laboratory Quality Management (www.POLQM.ca) which provides education, research and community outreach for medical laboratories professionals in Canada and abroad.

Since 2002, POLQM has provided an intensive on-line virtual classroom Certificate Course in Laboratory Quality Management for laboratory professionals interested in developing the knowledge and skills to be a medical laboratory Quality Manager.


Dr. Nafouri is a known advocate in Health Care Excellence model, Safety Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Infection Prevention and Environmental Health with over 15 years of experience. Dr. Nafouri serves on the Saudi Quality Council Board as an Executive Officer and Chairman of the Healthcare Group. He is the Ambassador of the Program Office for Laboratory Quality Management of the University of British Columbia, Canada. He was the Team Leader in Abu Dhabi Award for Excellence in Government Performance in 2008 and Taif Award in 2009-2010.

Dr. Nafouri is registered assessor with King Abdulaziz Quality Award. He led the Facility Management and Safety Team at King AbdulAziz Medical City – WR toward the Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation and served as Co-Chair of the Regional Safety Committee. He is Co-leader of Prevention and Control of Infection chapter of JCI re-accreditation. He is registered inspector with the Collage of American Pathologists and active member of the Emergency Preparedness and many healthcare Commissioning Committees at KAMC-WR. He has many publications, articles, and conducted many instrumental researches and workshops.


Paul L. Epner, MBA, MEd is a health care strategist and consultant with special expertise in the field of laboratory medicine. His current focus is to define and validate the optimum role for clinical laboratory professionals to efficiently and effectively improve patient outcomes and reduce medical errors. Among his current and recent activities, Paul supports the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in producing evidence-based systematic reviews of clinical laboratory practices. He also supports the CDC in their “Clinical Laboratory Integration into Healthcare Collaborative™” initiative which seeks to improve the interface between clinicians and clinical laboratories. He recently completed work for RTI International under their contract with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to develop tools for reducing the risk of diagnostic error associated with the clinical laboratory.

Paul serves as President of the Clinical Laboratory Management Association (CLMA) and as a founding Director of the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM) for which he is also conference chair of the AHRQ-sponsored 6th International Diagnostic Error in Medicine conference.
Previously, he was with Abbott Diagnostics where he spent 31 years working in the U.S., in Japan and in China. His final position at Abbott was Director of Healthcare Improvement Initiatives in which he focused on solving problems facing the clinical laboratory profession.
